I wanted to update you all on my skin’s progress. Last month I wrote a long post on the history of my skin and my battle with acne throughout my life. About two (going on three) months now I made some big changes in hope to clear my skin and rid my acne, and so far I am extremely pleased with the results.
Just to re-cap for those of you who did not read my previous post, I have had terrible acne for years and years now. I changed up my diet, went on medication (Yaz), began to exercise more and used so many different brands of skincare and nothing worked – until now.
So, I will begin to explain what I have done to clear my skin, both internally and externally, and how long it took to see visible results.
+ I started taking a new contraceptive pill:
My doctor initially prescribed Yaz to me when I was 15 and I took that for a little over four years. It worked at the time but I noticed the effects of clearing up my skin wore off about a year ago, although I only ventured back to the doctors for advice about this two months ago when my acne was at its peak. Soo, my doctor prescribed Diane-35 to me, which is another type of contraceptive pill commonly used to treat acne. She mentioned to me that Diane-35 is generally more successful in treating acne. I have a friend who takes Diane-35 and she swears by it. My doctor told me it would take at least three months to see any changes in my skin, however I definitely started to notice a difference after three weeks. I am now almost at the end of the second month of being on Diane-35 and my skin is honestly the clearest it has been in forever. I haven’t been experiencing any sore, deep and painful breakouts around my chin and on my cheeks which is amazing! At the beginning of February I will return to my doctor so she can see the results so far. The plan was for me to go onto Roaccutane if Diane-35 did not work, however at this rate I shouldn’t need to do that.
+ I began taking a regular course of probiotics and liver cleansing tablets:
My beauty therapist is currently studying natural medicine and told me that I needed to be taking probiotics and something to support my liver because I take the contraceptive pill. Probiotics are essential to helping keep a healthy gut. If your gut is unhealthy, it shows through the skin and often can cause breakouts. The liver rids the body of any toxins, and if we don’t support it often our skin will suffer. I was experiencing breakouts in the areas that signalled my gut and liver needed a bit of help. Probiotics and liver cleansing tablets have definitely helped to clear out my skin.
+ Regular facials/peels:
I started to get regular facials, or should I say peels and microdermabrasions, every two weeks. This helps to rid of any dead skin cells and kill bacteria in my face. My beauty therapist informed me of how dry my skin is, and because of this excessive dryness my skin became oily. I don’t naturally have oily skin, my skin is actually naturally very dry. This made sense to me because I have such dry skin on the rest of my body. The first time I visited my beauty therapist she performed a microdermabrasion on me, and since then I have been getting mandalic peels and lactic acid treatments – extractions are always performed during these sessions. After extractions and a peel, she pops me underneath a UV lamp to kill all the bacteria in my skin. My skin is always brighter and looks so much clearer after these treatments, and in particular my skin is so smooth as she has gotten out the gunk and blackheads that may be trapped.
+ A new skincare routine:
I altogether stopped my previous skincare routine after I began to get skin treatments and started a new one. I also eliminated any ‘acne’ products full stop. I don’t even use a spot treatment anymore. All the products that I use are hydrating and nourishing, and designed to provide my skin with much needed moisture. I reallyyyy love the skincare brand UltraCeuticals at the moment, and I am so happy with how this brand has transformed my skin! UltraCeuticals is an Australian brand that contains no nasty chemicals such as parabens and sulphates.
My morning routine:
– UltraCeuticals Ultra Milk Cleanser
This is a creamy and moisturising cleanser that really cleans the skin, but doesn’t leave it feel tight and dry or stripped. Some moisturising cleansers make the skin feel like it hasn’t been cleaned properly, but not this product. I am obsessed with it.
– Qi Beauty Hydrating Mist
This is a lovely hydrating mist that I like to use as soon as I have patted the shower water off my face so that my skin isn’t left to dry out in the air. It contains a lot of essential oils although it still feels nice and light on the face. I believe that Margot Robbie is the Qi beauty ambassador, and she has used this mist since 2007!
– Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum
This baby ensures that my skin is deeply hydrated underneath, not just on the surface. It helps to plump the skin and smooth out any fine lines and wrinkles. I’m only going on 20, however I have fine lines around my mouth from smiling and laughing so much. These add character to you though, right?
– Iluka by Natalie Imbruglia Light Day Cream with SPF
I love this new product! I only recently incorporated this into my skincare routine – I had been using my night cream as my day cream. Natalie Imbruglia has amazing skin so I was very intrigued when she brought out her own skincare range. The range is anti-aging and contains no parabens or sulphates and doesn’t test on animals. This cream is so moisturising, yet isn’t heavy and doesn’t leave the skin feeling oily.
– JBronze Daily Beauty Balm SPF 50
I have spoken about this in my previous posts. It is just a fantastic hydrating product that has an amazing SPF rating.
My night time routine:
– UltraCeuticals Ultra Milk Cleanser
– Qi Beauty Hydrating Mist
– UltraCeuticals Ultra Brightening Serum
Every second night I use this product in order to help the appearance of the scars on my face. Even though my breakouts have cleared, unfortunately I have been left with a lot of scarring. When I apply the serum I can feel a slight tingle, so I think it also helps to clear my pores and minimise their appearance.
– UltraCeutials Ultra Moisturiser Cream
My hero product. This cream prevents any excessive peeling and flaking that I did begin to experience with my skin. When is oily and peeling skin ever a good sign? Since using this my skin has stopped both being oily and peeling, and has become super soft and hydrated.
– Ella Bache Creme Speciale Yeux
I have been using this eye cream for a really long time now, and I still love it so much. It was featured in my first skincare routine post.
+ I also changed the type of make up I wear daily:
All I ever use on my face in terms of make up now is Jane Iredale. I love her Full Coverage BB Cream and Pressed Powder. Because my skin has cleared so much I barely need to wear any make up! I really only need it for the scarring. Jane Iredale is perfect for acne prone skin, and I don’t trust anything else at the moment. If I go out I will wear my Nars Sheer Glow or L’Oreal True Match Foundation, however I get so anxious when I wear them. I panic that my pores are becoming clogged and I freak out at the thought I might have a breakout the following day from wearing these foundations. I honestly don’t know how I used to wear such full coverage foundation each day of the week. Obviously I felt like I had to because of my breakouts, but my skin never cleared up from wearing it. I admit I was tempted to return to my Nars Sheer Glow and Bobbi Brown powder while I was waiting for Diane-35 and my new skincare routine to kick in, however I stuck it out and just had to accept the fact that people would see some of my blemishes. In the long run I am so pleased I stuck with Jane Iredale through the bad breakouts, as my skin has now been rewarded.
If you suffer from any skin conditions, generally doing just ‘one thing’ won’t help it. Through a combination of internal and external treatments, skin conditions often can be helped. It has taken me years to find out what works best for my skin, however the journey is worth it once you begin to see results. Perseverance is the key!
