Winter Skin | How To

Personally, I love it when the weather cools down. In my opinion, the icier the wind the better because it means I can bust out the scarves, coats and be all cozied up in bed with my cup of tea. The only downside to the blustering winds is that my typically oily skin does a back flip and becomes ultra dry and flaky – who’s with me? Fear not, for there measures we can take to keep our skin bouncy, smooth and hydrated and not at all resembling some crusty old reptile thing in one of those low budget horror movies.

  1. Amp up the hydrating serums and oils

Serums can penetrate the deepest into our skin because of its molecular structure, so they are a great way to inject hydration. I also love layering oils over the top of my serums and moisturizers for that extra drink! Product recommendations: Dr Dennis Gross Clinical Hydration Booster, Eve Lom Intense Hydration Serum, Harvest Garden Organic Facial and Eye Serum, Kosmea Organic Rosehip Oil.

  1. Hydrate from the inside out

It’s all well and good to hydrate topically but what about the inside? Obviously we all need our 8 glasses (at least) of water each day, but it is also a good idea to take supplements that will hydrate you too. Fish oil is chock full of omegas which will leave the skin glowing. Some tonics contain ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Glutathione, which will also hydrate and keep you looking juicy. Product recommendations: Miss Vitality The Good Oil, Fountain The Glow Molecule.

  1. Mask baby, mask!

Masks are a great way to hydrate quickly. There are many forms from sheet masks to masks that you wash off and those that stay on the skin – so there is something for everyone. Product recommendations: Karuna Hydrating+ Face Mask, Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque, Sisley Express Flower Gel Mask.

  1. Don’t scald yourself

I know it can be so tempting to turn the shower on to a high temperature when it’s cold out, but this is so drying on the skin! Keep your shower at a reasonable temperature to avoid becoming a raisin.

  1. Do the dew

Some people say summer is the time to wear dewy makeup, but I say why not sport that look all year round? I think winter is the perfect time if any because there’s no heat to turn your beautifully strobed face into a sweaty mess. Cream and liquid highlighters are my go-to in winter. Product recommendations: The Base by Lara Bingle Illuminator, Mecca Cosmetica Enlightenment Balm, RMS Magic Luminizer, NARS Radiance Primer.

  1. Exfoliate

I really can’t stress the importance of exfoliating during winter enough as we need to slough those dry dead skin cells off to reveal fresh, radiant ones! Chemical exfoliation is my preferred method of exfoliating as it deeply exfoliates and doesn’t pull or irritate the skin. Product recommendations: Skinstitut L-Lactic Cleanser, Drunk Elephant Glycolic Night Serum, Dr Dennis Gross Peel Pads, African Botanics Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish.
