The Beauty Aficionados Series

On the surface, the beauty industry seems overly glamorous and plastic and is often criticised as being superficial. At the roots, beauty is all about self-confidence. Beauty has little to do with how that red lipstick makes you look – it’s how that red lipstick makes you feel. I spoke to four industry professionals who shared with me their passion for beauty and making people feel their best.

Erin Norden, Owner of Clean Beauty Market

With her calming and personable nature, it was no surprise when Erin told me she enjoys being able to connect with people at her store, Clean Beauty Market. “Even though it sounds a bit silly when you talk about products, it’s actually really powerful when you help people find things that improve their confidence. It makes people quite happy when they find products that they love,” she says.

Erin’s must-haves: Josh Rosebrook Vital Balm, Kjaer Weis Lipgloss, Osea Cleansing Milk, Hynt Beauty Concealer.

Signature look: an even base, a hint of mascara and natural-looking brows.

Briony Williams, Freelance Makeup Artist

The chic and fabulous Briony has spent the past 12 years enjoying glamming up her clients. When she was at school, she saw an advertisement for a makeup course which ignited her passion. “I love how the simplest amount of skincare and makeup can make someone look and feel so amazing,” she says. Her biggest beauty tip? “Consistency is definitely key.”

Briony’s must-haves: Codage #3 Serum, NARS Orgasm Loose Powder, Hourglass Illume Trio, Chantecaille Lip Chic in Daphne.

Vanessa Phillips, Dermal Therapist

Comparing Vanessa to a bursting ray of sunshine is no exaggeration. Her face literally lights up when talking about skincare and beauty. Her favourite thing about skin is the way she can make people feel. “I can make people feel confident from the inside out. I love what I do. It doesn’t feel like work,” she says. “I love how people see me because they want to, not because they have to.”

Vanessa’s must-haves: Jane Iredale BB Cream, DMK Melanotech Drops, Betagen and Herb and Mineral Mist, Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette.

Signature look: fresh skin, bronzer, and a neutral lip.

Shannon Jennings, Freelance Makeup Artist

Shannon is a true artist and nurturer. She began her career in artistry after spending time as a chef and florist. “I wanted to make women feel great about themselves. I love that beauty’s not actually really about how women look, it’s how they feel. It’s all about the experience,” she says. When she isn’t working on photoshoots with the likes of musician Amy Shark, she is cooking, growing vegetables, or traveling.

Shannon’s must-haves: Estee Lauder Double Wear Light, RCMA Cream Palette, Tom Ford Cocoa Mirage Eye Quad, Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant.
